SolaRIS will offer a rebate of RM1,000/kWac up to a maximum of RM4,000.

KUALA LUMPUR: The government is introducing a special incentive to encourage the installation of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems known as the Solar for Rakyat Incentive Scheme (SolaRIS).

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the government has also agreed to approve an additional quota of 100 megawatts (MW) under the People's Net Energy Metering (NEM) Programme.

"In order to expand the public's involvement in renewable energy generation, the government has agreed to approve an additional quota of 100 megawatts (MW) under the NEM Programme, which will increase the allocated quota to 350MW.

"The installation of solar PV systems on residential premises will also allow the roof space of buildings to be utilised for renewable energy generation.

"The launch of SolaRIS is expected to increase the adoption of solar generation among the public under the NEM Programme," he said in a statement today.

Fadillah said a rebate of RM1,000/kWac up to a maximum of RM4,000 will be given to new NEM applicants who submit NEM applications to the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) Malaysia on or after April 1 this year.

He said the scheme is open to first-time NEM applicants who are Malaysian citizens with a one-time claim limit per Tenaga Nasional Bhd account holder.

"The rebate will be based on a first come, first served basis for NEM quotas applied from April 1 to Dec 31, 2024."

"Approved applicants must have their solar PV systems operational no later than March 31 next year or until all the SolaRIS rebate quotas are distributed, whichever comes first."

He said rebate payments will only be made after the installation and operation of solar PV systems under the People's NEM Programme, which will be made under the name of the bill holder.

"The rebate will then be deposited into the user's local bank account, subject to terms and conditions."

Applications for quotas for this People's NEM Programme are open until Dec 31 this year or until all allocated quotas are distributed.

Fadillah, who is Energy Transition and Public Utilities Minister, said that government efforts are underway to increase renewable energy capacity to 70 per cent by 2050 and to reduce carbon emissions from the electricity supply sector.
